Title: Data Management Support

Client: Department of Justice (Justice)

Problem: During the development of the Department’s Data Strategy, Justice’s internal audit team initiative a consulting engagement to support the Strategy by providing a review of the data governance structures in place, including roles and responsibilities, as well as an inventory of the Department’s data assets and their value as strategic assets to the organization.

Solution: Nīewe Consulting (formerly Baiame) supported the internal audit team by identifying and classifying the data assets/holdings within the Department and identifying those that could be strategically leveraged for business intelligence purposes.  To do so, the team used best practices from the Data Management Book of Knowledge to develop a methodology to identify the data, the data owners, its sensitivity and classification in terms of its ability to be strategically leveraged for business intelligence purposes.

Impact: This project resulted in the identification of key data assets, gaps in oversight and recommendations to improve the current data governance structure and practices. Further, this engagement provided Justice with a clear direction for its data strategy going forward.
